Educational programs are conducted in the Dining Room after dinner most evenings. Programs range from conservation talks to regional and historical storytelling.

Flora

Southeastern Wildflowers
A photographic presentation featuring hundreds of common and rare wildflowers in the area is accompanied by a talk on how to identify different flowers, natural history and potential medicinal uses.

Invasive Plants
Identification is the first step to eradication. You’ll be surprised at how many invasive and exotic plant species are overtaking our yards, roadsides and trails.

Trees are “Treemendous”
Learn easy clues for identifying the evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs of the Chattahoochee National Forest, as well as the uses and historical significance of local species.

Evening Hike
Stroll around a short trail on our property with a staff member or volunteer, identifying trees and wildflowers, and discussing ecology and geology of the region.

Fauna

Mysteries of the Night
Enjoy the nocturnal sights, sounds and spooks during this popular presentation. On warm nights, a night hike may be included.

Southeastern Birds
Learn to identify local birds and their field marks and calls, and participate in Audubon bird counts.

Lepidoptera
Spring and summer brings butterflies. Acquaint yourself with local butterflies and moths and the plants that attract them.

Reptiles of the Appalachians
Reptiles are misunderstood creatures. Guests will learn the role they play in the forest, how they are different from other animal groups, and get to visit with one of the Hike Inn’s resident corn snakes or box turtles.

Conservation

Conservation Tips
Learn to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” at this evening program. Talks include simple living suggestions and tips on how you can protect your family, home and the environment on a day-to-day basis.

“Leave-No-Trace” Ethics
Learn to tread lightly and familiarize yourself with the seven ethical principles for front-country and backcountry excursions with a “leave-no-trace” trainer.

Miscellaneous

Local History
Imagine Dawson County 200 years ago and revive your idea of simple living and conservation of natural resources through this local history program.

Hike Inn Pictionary
Tailored to the education goals of the Hike Inn, this unique game brings both children and adults to the drawing board to learn more about nature, conservation and local history.

Appalachian Trivial Pursuit
Guests team up and find out how much they know (or have to learn) about the area. A programmer leads questions and answers, and awards Hike Inn merchandise to the winning team.
